The birthplace of democracy, site of countless historical events, and home to many great leaders of the past, the capital of Greece, Athens, is an excellent choice for anyone who loves history, wants to sightsee, or likes great food and a vibrant culture. Guests of vacation rentals and homes in Athens have an opportunity that is without compare; the chance to explore and understand modern and ancient Greek culture in a visually stunning atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. The first and most well known attraction in Athens is the Acropolis; a symbol of civilization and ancient Greece that has endured sieges, wars, and uprisings. The Parthenon and the Erectheion, two structures on the heights of the Acropolis, are beautiful marble buildings built to honor the gods. There is also a museum in the Acropolis that displays many of the carvings, artifacts, and paintings recovered from nearby archaeological digs.
The ancient Agora, or marketplace, of Athens is another popular attraction. It is here that the citizens of ancient Athens gathered to discuss the political and social issues of their time. It was the center of all the civic and economic activities of the city-state, and home to the ancient philosophers Plato and Socrates. This particular destination also is home to the world’s oldest theater, the Dionysius Theater, the Stoa, and several museums. The foremost museum in all of Athens is the National Archaeological Museum, where many displays showcase the artistic achievements of and artifacts from every Hellenic civilization since Mycenae. The Piraeus, the port of Athens, is another important attraction, and some excellent seafood restaurants can be found in the area as well as the Maritime Museum. The Plaka, an old section of Athens, is home to ancient structures, Greek Orthodox Museums, mosques, mansions, and restaurants. Two final areas to visit are the Kolonaki and Syntagama Square, which offer stunning views, old buildings, the Parliament Building, and the majority of Athens’ museums.
