The small town of Avanos holds special appeal for guests of vacation rentals who are interested in discovering both the rural aspects of Turkish life and the Eastern Christian culture left behind by the Byzantine Empire.
Avanos has several historic churches, many dating back more than a thousand years. Çavuşin (Nicephorus Phocas) and Güllüdere (St. Agathangelus) are both great examples of architectural and religious manifestations of the Byzantine people.
A more unusual attraction was discovered relatively recently in Avanos, which is fortunate for guests of Avanos vacation homes. A local farmer stumbled upon an entire underground city, known as “Ozkonak”, much of which is open to public display and enjoyment.
