Location & Description
A delightful rustic cottage in the beautiful Minho valley near to the Peneda Geres national park.
Quinta dos Casais is divided into two self contained areas. The lower floor sleeps two people and the upper floor sleeps six persons in two bedrooms. Both apartments can acommodate two extra persons on a folding 'sofa-bed'
This adorable quinta sits on 1 hectare of vineyards in the small village of Bravães near to Ponte de Barca. The village church is one of the oldest buildings in Portugal having been built in Roman times. In the churchyard are two interesting stone 'coffins'.
Its a short walk from the church, up the country lane, to the quinta with its vineyards and fruit trees. Next to the house you will see a large stone 'eira' where corn is laid out to dry in the sun. On the eira stands the 'espigueiro', a wooden structure for storing the corn. There is a large barbecue at the side of this area for you to enjoy cooking outside.
The grapes picked from the vineyards are taken to the manor house in Ponte da Barca during 'vindima',that takes place in late September, where the wine is made and bottled under the 'Quinta dos Casais' label. This an exciting time to visit the area.
On the quinta is a granite water tank for irrigating the fields. This tank is 5 m by 8 m. and can be used as a swimming pool during the hot days of summer. If you prefer something more sophisticated, a special rate of payment will allow you to use the pool at the manor house 3 miles away together with the gymnasium, Turkish and russian baths and the jacuzzi. These facilities will be opening in July 1999
