Property Description
Location & Description
The original house was built in the 16th century by the Duke of Cadaval but was destroyed in the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755. It was rebuilt in 1773 in its present Portuguese rural style. The Quinta, which has been completely restored is furnished with antiques and is one of the most pleasant country inns in Portugal.
A supporting wall of the old Palace can still be seen, leading to the one-time pilgrims resting place and the charming capela, or chapel, of Nossa Senhora da Piedade. This little chapel which survived the earthquake has a domed Manueline ceiling and the walls are covered in 18th century tiles describing the life of Christ. Every Sunday, at 12 noon, a public mass is celebrated here.
The pictures shown are of the main house but the cottages are of the same high standard of conversion and decoration.
There are several cottages in the grounds of the estate which have both hotel service and self catering facilities.
Each of the cottages comprises one or two double dedrooms with bathroom, sitting room, kitchen, terrace and private garden. There is a gymnasium, sauna and also a small swimming pool in a secluded part of the garden with views of the Atlantic coast.
There are several beaches only ten minutes away and horse riding and tennis are available nearby.Situated within 30 minutes of Lisbon, Quinta da Capela is surrounded by the Sintra hills, the poet Byron's 'Glorious Eden'.
The latin motto carved above the main door ' Et in Arcadia Ego' conveys the immediate impression of delight felt by the visitor. There are spectacular views of the romantic Palace of Monserrate and its botanical gardens, the lush vegetation of the Serra, with the ancient Moorish Castle and the royal Pena Palace.
The Quinta is the ideal base for visiting the many historical monuments of Sintra and the capital city of Lisbon.
