Location & Description
Quinta da Capela -built in the 16th century by the Duke ofCadaval & destroyed in the great Lisbon earthquake of 17c55, was rebuilt in 1773 in its presentPortuguese rural style. A supporting wall of the old palace can still be seen, leading to the former pilgrims resting place and the charming chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piede. The little chapel, which survived the earthquake, has a domed Manueline ceiling and the walls are covered in 18th century tiles depicting the life of Christ. Every Sunday at 12 noon a public mass is celebrated in this small chapel. Today the Quinta has been converted into one of the most pleasant country Inns in Portugal. The manor has been completely restored and is luxioursly furnished with Portuguese antique furniture. The attention to detail is amazing even the Port wine decanters in the bedrooms are replenished daily. There are seven bedrooms in the main house, all with ensuite bathroom except for one where the bathroom door is adjacent to the bedroom door. All rooms have a telephone and are centrally heated in winter. There are several cottages in the grounds of the estate which have both hotel service and self catering facilities. Each of these cottages comprises two double rooms with a bathroom, a sitting room, a kitchen and a terrace and private garden. There is a gymnasium, sauna and, in a secluded part of the garden, a small swimming pool. Horse riding and tennis are available nearby. Situated just 30 minutes from Lisbon, this quinta makes an ideal haven for the business traveller. It's situation makes it an ideal base for visiting the sightseeing areas of Sintra and Lisbon and the coastal areas. From the area there are spectacular views of the mountains, and the romantic Palace of Monserrate with its botanical gardens. The gardens have a view across the across the plains to the sea which is the
setting for some magnificent sunsets.
