Property Description
When wine sales were declining, Ines' great grand mother, The Condessa of Vila Real, redesigned the bottle of the estate wine and included on it a picture of the family home, Palacio de Mateus which became one of the most famous marketing successes in the world. The success of Mateus Rose resulted in it becoming a blended wine with the careful proportions to maintain the same taste during different vintages.

The distinctive shape of the bottle was chosen to make it deliberately small so that it would appear in the front row in retailers displays. The design is based on an old port wine bottle of the region. Nowadays the company producing the wine is separate and pays the Foundation of Mateus one escudo for each bottle with the picture of the Palácio, a price that has been fixed for many years without adjustment for inflation.

During your stay a visit to the Palácio de Mateus is recommended. It is the third most visited building in Portugal. Each year from the middle of July to September, the house hosts a music festival with over 40 major concerts.

There are four guest bedrooms in the manor, three of which have an en suite bathroom whilst the fourth has an en suite shower room. Two of the rooms have double beds and two have twin beds. Guests also have the use of a lounge and a dining room.

The house is centrally heated for winter comfort. The farm kitchen prepares traditional bread, jam sausages etc. Also available is the strong dark Portuguese honey.

There are horses on the estate and also bicycles may be borrowed and there is a playground for children.

This house is a good venue to hold business meeting and is about 55 miles from Porto airport by a new motorway. It is also possible to fly into the nearby regional airport at Vila Real which has two flights daily to Lisbon.
