Chez Vignas - Dordogne

Ribérac has a very good market on Friday mornings and most towns and villages have lively markets on different days of the week, the stalls groaning with fresh local produce. Supermarkets and other shops can be found in the larger towns.

Brantôme (30km), is an island-town set between two branches of the River Dronne. With its five bridges and ancient abbey under the cliff, its huge belfry reflected in the river, the old Virginia creeper-covered houses, the weeping willows and a public garden by the river, it has great charm. There are several cafes and small restaurants and two hotels, each of which has a Michelin star restaurant.

At Champagnac de Belair, 6km from Brantôme, is the Moulin du Roc, which has a two star Michelin restaurant.

Périgueux, is the capital of the region and although it is a busy modern town, it has a lovely old quarter around the great cathedral of St Front, with its mass of domes and steeples. The town is surrounded by farms producing foie gras, and the shops are full of it.

The Lot et Garonne and Dordogne areas are still relatively undiscovered tourist destinations and have a lot to offer as far as scenery, typical villages and castles, prehistoric caves, gastronomy, kindness of people.. and prices tend to be lower than the French Riviera. Possible outdoor activities include horseback riding, canoeing, running and hicking, bicycling, golf, tennis, etc... Lots of cultural events (outdoor concerts, theater, festivals) take place in summer.

Activities

Riding stables, where you can hire horses for an hour or a day, golf courses, boat trips on the rivers and tennis courts are all within reasonable reach, and there is good fishing in the lakes and rivers.

This is excellent walking and cycling country with well signposted routes and ideal for those who prefer the gentler pursuits of photography or bird watching. And from spring until late autumn there are numerous fetes and festivals, outdoor concerts, both classical and jazz, theatre and country antiques markets.

This is an ideal base for half day, one day or two day trips to the Lot-et Garonne Valleys, the vineyards of Bordeaux, the beaches of the Atlantic coast, and the Armagnac region of the Gers, which reaches down to the foothills of the Pyrenees.
