Property Description
The Castello Aragonese is easily the most impressive historical monument in Ischia.

It stands on a volcanic rock connected to the island by a bridge built in 1438 by Alfonso of Aragon. The Castle, overlooking the vast horizon of the sea, was originally built as a castrum in 474 BC by Gerone of Siracusa and, after a long period of abandonment, reached its golden period during the fourteenth century.

Under the Aragonese dynasty, it became a political, cultural and spiritual centre of notable interest. The Renaissance court of the noble poet Vittoria Colonna, saw the peak of the castle's splendour. Her court raised the Castello to heights of unheard glory: it breathed new life into the place; the arts and sciences flourished as never before under these skies - even Michelangelo was enticed here – but the decline had already begun in the 15th century and continued for more than 100 years.

This unique location now contains three holiday apartments and a hotel. We are proud to include these apartments in our portfolio! This is an exceptional and unbelievably impressive holiday location. While the majority of holiday-makers are banished to the foot of the fort and can only admire it from a distance, you have the privilege of residing within it and gaining an insight into the private rooms of the castle!

There is just nothing to compare to it: the castle walls house churches, courtyards, antique archways, terraces, gardens and arcades with outstanding views of the sea, the peninsula, the harbor of Ischia and the wide horizon in the distance ... simply unique!

You will need to take the lift from the bottom to reach the top part of the castle, approx. 80 m above sea level, where the apartments are situated. The three units are full of light, functionally furnished and decorated in friendly colors. They are located separately from one another and each has ist own entrance. They are all different and at a distance from one another. It is hard to feast enough on the wonderful view from up here. Enjoy the view while watching the seagulls circling above you... It may sound exaggerated but we feel it is justified: you feel nearer to Heaven here than anywhere else!

After a long day on the beach, why not relax in the Cocò restaurant. This small wooden hut has been around since the 50s and is just below the Castello, at the end of the causeway. We highly recommend their Spaghetti alle Vongole and after a couple of glasses of wine, it is comforting to know that your apartment is so near ... just a brief walk back home across the water, through the mild summer evening: wander along the boardwalk, with the tang of salty sea water in your nose, hop into the lift and travel upwards... fall asleep to the sound of waves and awaken to the greetings of seagulls.

About Ischia

Ischia, Capri, Procida and Vivara are known as the Partenopean islands of the bay of Naples. Ischia, Procida and Vivara lie to the north of the gulf, while Capri lies in the south, facing the peninsula of Sorrento. The typically Mediterranean climate of Ischia is dry and warm, with temperatures sometimes reaching 35° during the months of July and August. The shape of the island of Ischia is compact and round (see the map), with a varied morphology. Dominated by Mount Epomeo (789 mt.asl), the island is scattered with many other hilly features, often separated by valleys and gullies that create a suggestive and sinuous landscape and is enriched with both chestnut and oak woods and low vegetation. The island 's circumnavigation is about 39 km. The island is famous for it´s spa waters and hot springs. Ischia's spa mineral water is obtained from underground tanks which collect the rain waters. The natural rain-fall seeps into earth and collects in tanks which are warmed from hot springs lying in the depths of the ground. Water turns into steam and rises to the surface where more tanks are thus warmed, creating what is known as thermo-mineral water. The temperature of these mineral waters can go from 15C° and 86C°, therefore cold to ipothermal and thermal to hyperthermal.

Tip: The hot baths at Negombo, in the Bay of S. Montano, near Lacco Ameno in the north-west of the island, are particularly chic: the facilities are well cared for and there are many different pools, as well as an attractive bay, surrounded by almost African flora, with palm trees and a wealth of flowering trees and bushes (opened from April to October). Another tip: the appealing (and yet simple) small Gondola baths at the wonderful sandy beach of Maronti, in the south of the island: a small hot water pool situated right on the coast and a natural sauna carved out of the rock: hot steam rises up from the earth – so hot that you even feel the need to cool off on the sea, during the winter ... This is just the place to forget the rest of the world ... The hot baths, appreciated by the Romans, explain why the Ischian coast is so popular with visitors from all over the world. Last but not least: the hot springs explain the special climate on the island - they provide mild weather all year round.

Additional information: The Castello Aragonese is now host to several cultural events - there are art exhibitions, concerts and a disco. This can disturb the peace in August. The most peaceful apartment is Campanile. The journey to the castle is easily solved: you will be picked up at the airport or train station in Naples and taken to the Castello. The cost of this transfer is included in the apartment price (taxi to harbor, ferry to island/ journey there and back). You will be given a tour of the fort itself.

Please note: The castle is not suitable to people with walking difficulties. The castle is perched above the water, therefore it could be dangerous for children. It is not suitable for children from 1 - 10 years old. Children are allowed, but parents have to be aware that the location could be dangerous: there are stone steps and drop offs. Children have to be under adults supervision. Parking is a big problem in the island. We recommend not to bring your car in the island, where frequent buses as well as taxi service make it easy to get around in the island without a car. Scooters can be rented. The guests of the apartments enjoy hotel services from a nearby hotel, including porter and concierge services and hotel terrace dining. The hotel concierge can give invaluable help in booking ferries to nearby Capri or Naples or renting cars or scooters, as well as information about Ischia's attractions.
