Baja California Sur

The Mexican state of Baja California stretches for hundreds of miles along the Pacific Ocean from its northwestern border with San Diego, California to its southern terminus, its border with the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. It is an area of many contrasts that include modern cities and ancient archaeological sites, cool coastal communities and hot deserts. Popular day-tripper destinations like Tijuana are quite loud and crowded. Resort areas like Playas de Rosarito and Ensenada offer serene, beautiful beaches and many lively activities. The peninsula of Baja California is bounded on the east by the Sea of Cortez. Between the sea and the ocean, there is lots of farmland, and desert and mountainous areas that do not attract many tourists. A visitor’s best bet is to stay in Rosarito, Ensenada or San Felipe.

The beaches of Rosarito are great for surfing, sunbathing and jet skiing. Other popular pastimes are fishing, hang gliding, dune buggy riding and exploring Rosarito Canyon on horseback. The state is well known for natural resources, the desert, and for its wonderful tourist opportunities. In the north of the State is the Vizcaíno Desert, as well as the small coastal lakes of San Ignacio and Ojo de Liebre, which are protected by the federal government. The northern part of the state also includes the wonderful and desolate tourist spots of Mulege, Bahia Concepcion & Loreto. Further south towards the tip of Baja is the East Cape, famous for world class diving and sailboarding. The East Cape is home to Los Barriles and Cabo Pulmo. At the very tip of Baja California Sure sits the world famous resort area of Los Cabos, the place where San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas are located.
