Costa Rica weather by month charts
Weather conditions all across Costa Rica are excellent in April. Hot, sunny days at the beach are followed by mild evenings with soft sea breezes. Anyone’s list of favorite things to do in a tropical paradise can be easily accomplished. The fish are biting and the golf courses are so inviting. A myriad of water sports await both the pro and the person who is about to try scuba diving for the first time. Since Easter is a prominent feature on the Costa Rican calendar, many religious observances and events are scheduled.
Although Costa Rica doesn’t have tremendous temperature fluctuations between winter and summer, it has a dry season and a rainy one. Late April marks the subtle entrance into the rainy season, with 1.3 inches of precipitation for the month in Puntarenas. Throughout the 6 climatic zones of this compact country, the weather conditions are always favorable for those seeking a great getaway destination. The average April temperature range in Puntarenas on the Pacific coast is 78ºF (low) to 92ºF (high). Humidity there is usually 66-85%. In San Jose, away from the coasts, temperatures are lower, in the 62-79ºF range, and the humidity hovers around 70%. Wind speed throughout the country and the year averages 6 mph. Sea surface temperature fluctuates occasionally and averages out to 81ºF at Guanacaste and Puntarenas.
Throughout the country, the week before Easter is celebrated with religious services and processions through the streets. The town of Cartago in the central highlands - about a 30-minute drive from San Jose - is a popular place for religious pilgrims to gather in the days preceding Easter Sunday. In 2012, Holy Week is April 2- 8.

Each April 11, the country pays tribute to a young hero, Juan Santamaria, who gave his life in 1856 in a battle for what was to become the beginning of the struggle for independent nationhood. The main festivities are in north central valley Alajuela province, although smaller ones take place across the country. On this national holiday, Santamaria’s home town of Alajuela, close to the San Jose airport that bears his name, hosts a parade. The people celebrate on what is also called Battle of Rivas Day with music, dancing and lots of food and beverages.

This April 21 - 28, 2012 race that has been named the Northern Pacific Challenge is truly for the sound of body and mind. A gathering of international teams will negotiate some tough terrain, lush landscape and sparkling waterways as they compete and test their skills at rafting, ropes, mountain biking and hiking, kayaking and traversing the thick rainforest canopy. It’s a rush for those who enter and a wonderful event to behold as a spectator. The 2012 course is being planned and should be similar to the 2011 race, which ran through places that included Tierras Morenas, Curubande, Canas Dulces, Junquillal Beach and Bolanos Bay.

An important thing to keep in mind when planning an April vacation in Costa Rica is that Easter is a popular time for both locals and visitors to head for the shore. The most desirable accommodations in coastal communities, especially those in Puntarenas and Guanacaste, can be difficult to secure at the last minute. Book early. Another thing to note is that many shops and other facilities are closed during Holy Week. Visitors should make sure that they have everything they might need for the week before merchants shut their doors.
