Costa Rica is a weather world unto itself. With 6 distinct climatic zones - Central Valley (San Jose), North Pacific (Guanacaste), Central Pacific (Puntarenas), South Pacific, Caribbean and Northern Zone - conditions in January do vary somewhat but are always favorable and provide an ideal getaway destination. The average January temperature range in Puntarenas on the Pacific coast is 76ºF (low) to 89ºF (high). Since January is in the middle of the dry season, a scant 0.3 inch of rainfall is the norm and sunshine is abundant. Humidity throughout most of this coastal country tends to be on the high side, especially in the morning, when January readings are in the 62-89% range. At elevation in the central region, slightly cooler and dryer conditions prevail. Wind speed is quite steady throughout the year and averages 6 mph in January. Sea surface temperature is variable but ranges between 75-85ºF at Guanacaste and Puntarenas.
This annual festival is scheduled for January 11 - 23, 2012 in a small mountain town which suddenly becomes the biggest party place on the planet. Visitors from around the globe flock to Palmares, in the province of Alajuela, for its unique combination of cultural offerings and overall fun atmosphere. Just 21 miles east of the Pacific and 26 miles west of the capital of San Jose, its central location and exciting array of things to do and see make this event a must for fans of everything from folk dancing to fantastic Costa Rican cuisine, bloodless bullfighting (toros a la tica) to a magnificent horse parade (tope). Among the other fiesta attractions are concerts, fireworks, kids activities and an abundance of participating bars where both locals and visitors gleefully raise their glasses in celebration of another successful fiesta.

From sunup to sunset, playing a round at one of dozens of gorgeous golf courses throughout the country is idyllic. Players have the luxury of choosing the setting - facing the Pacific in places like Puntarenas or surrounded by the breathtakingly beautiful flora and fauna at the edge of a tropical rainforest. World-class tennis courts are similarly located throughout the land, even in places where howler monkeys and toucans will screech their disproval when a player commits a foot fault. Boating, fishing and participating in water sports in January are fabulous. Charter boat excursions to waters rich with sailfish set sail from numerous ports. Family friendly trips in calm January seas go in search of whales and provide the opportunity of a lifetime to capture the breathtaking sight of breeching behemoths with a camera. Lots of dolphins along the Pacific coast will entertain onlookers with their amusing antics and acrobatics. Eco explorers can stay close to the coast and come upon a variety of turtles, sea birds and marine creatures who crawl ashore. For those with a more daring sense of adventure, a visit to the rain forest and a zip line trip across the canopy will yield close-up encounters with everything from fluttering butterflies to lounging lizards. Of course, there are lots of beaches and many interesting things to do at the shore. Beaches with surging surf are great for boarders. Beaches in protected bays are ideal for swimming, snorkeling and just stretching out and working on a tan. And there are numerous areas just offshore where diving is simply divine.
