Establishing Your Keywords And Key Phrases

Before you begin designing your website, you need to figure out as many possible words and phrases that your potential customers are likely to use when searching for a vacation rental like yours.

Basically, your goal is to identify the top keywords and phrases that your target market searches for on the Internet and then incorporate them into your site.

And whatever you do, don't take this task lightly. Determining your keywords and phrases is of paramount importance to your online success.

Keep notes. When you identify phrases and words, keep a list of the most important ones. You will need to look at this list when building your website.

Ways To Identify Your Keywords

Put yourself into the mind of your potential customer. Think about what someone would type in a search engine to find your particular type of rental. Also, find a friend and ask them to do a search for a place like yours and record the keywords which he/she uses in that search.

Remember, most people who do a search type more than one or two words. For example, if I was to search for vacation home in Cabo San Lucas....

I might type in "beach vacation rentals cabo san lucas" or "cabo san lucas villas". Or, I might even type in "cabo san lucas villa with pool" or "beach rentals cabo san lucas".

There are many ways that a person can search for you, so consider any phrases they might use. Consider words that can be written different ways and even misspelled. For example, "beach front" and "ocean front" might also be written as "beachfront" and "oceanfront".

Make a list of all the words that come into your mind.

Use A Search Term Tool

Certain websites track what users search for. Overture.com has a search Term Selection Tool where you can find out what people search for when they are looking for a vacation rental like yours. The tool also offers suggestions and provides details on how many people have used the Overture network to search for the particular term.

Find out the keywords that other vacation rental owners use. Once you have a list of keywords and phrases visit Google and do a search using each of the words. Carefully examine the sites that come up and see if there are any keywords or phrases that you may have overlooked.

Next, narrow down your key search terms.

Make a list of your top 20 terms. Remember that every page on your site counts and is a potential entry point. For each page pick one or two of the most relevant phrases from your list and incorporate them into the text.

Once you determine your keywords, its time to create the actual written content of your website.
