At the far northern end of Kealakekua Bay, a small bronze plaque marks the exact spot where Captain James Cook died. Fifty yards to the left, is a 27 foot white marble obelisk, erected in his memory in 1874 by some of his fellow countrymen.

Lono's (the Hawaiian fertility god) private sacred bay, Kealakekua (kay-allah-kay-kooah) abounds with culture, history, and grandeur and is an important part of the Big Island and Hawaiian heritage.

During your stay, be sure to visit one of the most accessible and enchanting cultural sites in Hawaii. Located in South Kona is the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Park. Translated, the "place of refuge at Honaunau" is the most complete restoration of an ancient religious sanctuary in Hawaii
