Property Description
Ideally situated in a small village midway between San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, our location allows you the freedom to explore a different colonial town every day.

Upon opening the gates to your private domain each morning, you look across the square to the lovely ancient church, watch the slow comings and goings of daily village life, and step out onto the silver trail. You can hike or ride for hours, having the countryside to yourselves. There is a large lake nearby. The villagers are friendly, and the area is very safe.

Be forewarned: life at the hacienda is so enjoyable that you may not want to do all those other things that you had planned! You can wander down to the river, or drive the short distance to Dolores Hidalgo, to continue your search for more beautiful talavera pottery and tiles. You can visit the natural hots prings whose long tunnel, which ends in a cave with water gushing out, reminds you of a scene from Indiana Jones. Or spend the day at an olympic-size swimming pool filled with the same hot water. There is even golf and tennis to be found nearby if the spirit moves you.

The hacienda is comfortably elegant, furnished with colonial antiques and locally-made pieces, luxurious bedding with high thread-count linens and feather beds or down-alternative beds atop high-quality mattresses, down duvets, chocolates, fresh flowers, amenities basket, and robes.

There are eleven beautiful bedrooms, some with beautiful views of the Sierra Madres, some with private gardens, each with high-speed internet, sat. TV, fireplace, terrace, private bath. The hacienda is HUGE (approximately 50 rooms, and more than 40,000 sq. ft. under roof), but has many intimate spaces, and surrounds a large enclosed central garden with enormous porches (portales). It consists of 10 walled-in private acres, with gardens and stables. If you have stayed in busy San Miguel before, you will appreciate our quieter nights, peaceful days, and lack of auto traffic and fumes. Our water is purified, and is equipped with hot-and-cold bottled-water dispensers.

Full-time staff of 18 includes cooks, housekeepers, gardeners, bilingual manager, massage therapists, and stable and pool personnel. Our cook, Yolanda, will prepare delicious meals for you. She can accommodate any dietary preferences. Some fresh, organically-grown produce can be supplied by the hacienda, depending on the season.

We are child-friendly. The village is full of children. They quickly entice any visiting children into their giggling midst. Language does not seem to be a problem. The kids that have stayed here do not want to leave when it's time to go home.

No smoking inside, please. There are plenty of outdoor living areas.

Las Trancas, like much of Mexico, is caught between times. The old women wrapped in their shawls walk next to teenagers in Nikes. Many of the men in town have left for the U.S, in order to provide a better life for their families. Some send money home, some fall prey to the allure of the American life and never return, some die in the desert crossing. You find yourself wistfully hoping that time could stand still, that the people could retain their heritage and culture, and not succumb to the American way of life. But time marches on, and the allure is all too real.

Proyecto Pueblito, or the Village Project, is an ongoing project designed to help improve the quality of life for the villagers in the surrounding area. The intent is to build roads, a public garden, a free medical clinic, provide teachers and tutors, build a library, and provide sustainable jobs to area residents, to encourage the next generation to stay with their families and work in Mexico, helping to carry on cultural traditions that are being lost in the face of progress. This planning is being done with a committee of respected villagers and involved professionals, including architects, builders, doctors, and historians. Already it has begun providing much needed jobs to many local people. It has supplied funds to families with urgent needs. Houses have been repaired, and built.

The rental of Hacienda Las Trancas provides money to this fund. Fully half of all rental income goes directly to Proyecto Pueblito, and the other half is recycled back into the hacienda to improve the facilities, thus insuring that future donations for the project will continue. Your support is very much appreciated.
