Activities & Attractions
Because the Valley played such an important part in the Civil War, it is not surprising that its legacy lives on. Battlefields such as New Market and Cedar Creek give visitors a glimpse into one of the most heroic and tragic times in American history. Every fall, over three thousand re-enactors converge on the grounds of the historic Belle Grove Plantation to recreate the Battle of Cedar Creek. This event is a must for any Civil War buff.

The Shenandoah River, along with nearby stocked, mountain trout streams, play host to some of the best fishing in the East. Nationally known fly fishing expert Harry Murray owns and operates his fly shop in Edinburg, two miles south of the Inn. Here you can find the latest hand-tied flies, as well as a large selection of Orvis rods and apparel. He also offers guide service and fishing schools.

An afternoon of canoeing or tubing is just a short walk from the Inn's backdoor on the Shenandoah River. If you bring your own equipment, we will be more than happy to drive you up stream for a leisurely float back to the Inn. The Shenandoah River Outfitters, about thirty minutes away on the South Fork, provides canoes and river shuttles.

Antique shops are just minutes away in the towns of Woodstock and Edinburg. You'll be sure to find that special gift to remember your stay in the valley.
Many of our guests enjoy visiting one of our area's caverns. Touring one of these magnificent works of nature provides a great way to escape the mid-day summer sun.

Hiking trails in the National Forest are ten minutes away. Maps to some of the more popular ones are available at the Inn. Horseback riding is another wonderful way to experience the beauty of the Valley. The Fort Valley Riding Stable offers one hour, half-day, and all-day trail rides for all abilities.
