Location: in the heart of the Chianti region, half-way between Florence and Siena.
The farmhouse La Tenuta lies half way between Florence and Siena in the very heart of the Chianti area. This is one of the most popular regions between Florence and Siena. Vineyards, olive groves and fields form a paradise-like landscape, which was moulded over centuries by the farmers' patient toil. The surrounding countryside resembles one immense garden. Famous for its wine, the celebrated Chianti Classico, this area of Tuscany has far more than just wine to offer the curious visitor. Indeed, by just driving around you will come across many delightful villages, each one with its own history. You will discover how Tuscany is the result of a perfect liaison between natural beauty, culture and tradition.
As you leave the village of Barberino Val d'Elsa and drive along a sandy road down the wide and open valley, coming past old wineries, vineyards and olive groves, you will reach the farmhouse which stands in a most privileged location - at the end of the road, on top of a small hill, and overlooking the valley in three directions.
La Tenuta was restored with great care. Originally the house was planned according to a traditional Tuscan pattern, with stables and storerooms on the ground floor and living quarters upstairs. What used to be the stables has now become a breakfastroom, a summer kitchen and a large playroom for children which all open onto what we call the "morning terrace" - in summer you might want to have breakfast here in the shade of the poplars which flank the terrace.
Furthermore on the ground floor you will find a twin bedroom with ensuite bathroom and living room which opens onto a loggia furnished as a summer living room. The terrace in front of the loggia is paved and surrounded by a lawn scattered with olive trees which blends into the landscape. You will probably spend the evenings on this side of the house, watching the setting sun.
On the first floor the large living room and country kitchen with fireplace seem made for gatherings with family or friends. Upon requet a cook can come into the house to prepare a meal with Tuscan specialities. On this floor there are two double bedrooms, one twin bedroom and two bathrooms. All bathrooms have bathtubs, some with shower curtains. The tower room up another flight of stairs houses a twin bedroom. These towers, a typical feature of Tuscan farmhouses, are called piccionaia in Italian, literally "dove tower". Not far from the house is a small pool with wooden deck for sunbathing. Deckchairs and sunbeds are provided.

Distances: the nearest shopping is at 4 km, in the village of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. Florence, Siena and San Gimignano can be reached in half an hour. Volterra, Arezzo and Lucca will take about one hour.
Sightseing in the vicinity: the romantic church of Sant'Appiano, Greve´market on Saturdays, the important Basilica de Impruneta, the hilltop town of Colle Val d'Elsa, the fortified village of Monteriggioni and the romanesque abbey S. Galgano.
Visiting wine and olive oil producing estates: the cellars of the family estate Le Corti in San Casciano are open to the public and the guests are welcome to make a visit. Most estates sell their wine directly, watch out for the signs "vendita diretta". We will provide a list with estates where it is possible to visit the cellars and learn more about how the wine and olive oil are made.
Restaurants: many good restaurants in Chianti can make eating out a way of discovering the area. Simple local trattorias which have existed for years as well as more sophisticated restaurants specialised in refined cuisine stand door to door: we have prepared a list of the places we prefer which you will find in the house.
Craftmanship: the closeby town of Impruneta is famous for its large terracotta pots which originally were used for the lemon trees and to store olive oil. You might also want to look up the nearby town Montelupo which produced pottery for Florence in the Renaissance. The same patterns are still hand-painted today. The town Colle Val d?Elsa on the way to Siena is famous for its crystal glass production. In Florence itself you will find a multitude of craftsmen working with silver, leather, wood, glass, pottery, paper and metal. You only have to walk around the small streets on the southern bank of the Arno river to discover them.
Walking and riding: the hills around Barberino offer wonderful treks. Good guidebooks and maps have been published recently in English as well as Italian which are on sale at most newsagents in Chianti.
