Property Description
Location
Siena, 100 m from Piazza del Campo

Siena is many a tourist's favourite starting point for going on excursions in the region - and if you choose Siena as your starting point too, you've made a lucky choice with this apartment.

The 14th-century palace is located in the heart of the quiet old town centre, just a few metres from the renowned Piazza del Campo.

The attractive and bright accommodation is on the top floor: a rooftop apartment with a terrace and a panoramic view. The apartment is well laid out with an interior design that is simple and functional with only what's necessary and nothing that's superfluous creating an ambience of spaciousness and a clear structure.

Harmonious hues have been chosen to enhance this effect. The walls have been painted white and the floor has been laid with white ceramic tiles in harmonious contrast to the natural shade of the antique roof beams and the bright, cream-coloured fabrics. The windows open either to the private terrace or to the gables of the palaces opposite.

You will love to breakfast on the terrace for hours and hours and you might enjoy spending the long evenings there even more. The terrace, equipped with lovely garden furniture, is full of plants and flowers. You have a panoramic view from here over the roofs of the town, pretty brick facades, towers crowned with merlons and, above all, the wide open landscape of the Chianti region is laid out in front of your eyes: hills, vineyards, olive groves and fields.

Siena is small and easy to get a feel for and the open landscape starts almost immediately beyond the town gates. In contrast to Florence, you will enjoy a comfortable peace and quiet here. There is hardly a noisy motorbike and no honking cars. With very few exceptions, cars are forbidden in the whole downtown area; within the town gates Siena is a pedestrian zone. There are parking spaces and car parks outside the town walls, which can be rented at weekly rates. The owner of the palace offers a private parking space outside the town wall free of charge which can be reached easily by bus.

Activities & Attractions
Conquer the whole town on foot. Right next to the palace is the traditional Pasticceria Nannini, the most well-known café in Siena (the owner's daughter is the rock singer Gianna Nannini). Here you will get the well-known local specialities (Riccarelli and Panforte, a hard cake filled with almonds and spices which keeps forever) and, of course, great gelato. The Italians have their breakfasts in such cafés, sipping a Caffelatte or Cappuccino while standing.

Our tip: go on excursions during the day and spend the evening in Siena - it's worth it. Start out with an evening walk (from about 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) near the palace, in the neighbouring and elegant Piazza Salimbeni. By the way, the world's oldest bank can be found on this square: "Monte die Paschi di Siena", which has been located here since the 13th century. Banchi di Sopra starts here - the most fashionable street in town with a great number of beautiful shops. Here is where the locals meet to chat every evening before having their dinner, an elegant and very Italian habit. Stroll downhill towards Piazza del Campo, the unique, shell-shaped square which is said to be one of the most spectacular squares in the world. Take a moment's rest here and have an espresso, Cinzano or Campari in one of the many street cafés, as the locals do.

The famous Palio takes place on this Piazza twice a year (in the beginning of July and in mid-August), a colourful horse-racing festival, held since the Middle Ages, in which every Contrada (city quarter) sends off its festively decorated horse to defend the quarter's honour after it has been blessed in the church. Siena awaits the festival in a fever of anticipation the whole year long. In the week before and after the Palio, celebrations take place in the streets: festive meals are eaten outside on long tables, large banquets in the romantic streets of the town organised by the various Contrade for hundreds of people
