THE FARMHOUSE

Welcome to San Lorenzo, a beautiful 17th century farmhouse that overlooks Monterchi, mediaeval jewel of the Tiber Valley and home of Piero della Francesca's fresco of the Pregnant Madonna (Madonna del Parto). Located in a spectacular position on a Tuscan hill, looking across to the Apennines of Umbria and The Marches, San Lorenzo has a splendid view of mediaeval hilltop towns of Anghiari and Citerna.

The Farmhouse seems like a small country hamlet from long ago where the manor dominates the Tabaccaia (old tobacco drying tower), the Fienile (hay barn), and the Rimessa (cereals store).

San Lorenzo offers accommodation in 2 self-catering apartments or in 2/3 or 4-bedded rooms, overlooking a well-kept garden with shady gazebo. Its large (14x6 m) swimming pool, on a natural terrace surrounded by green hills, has magnificent 360° views and is the perfect place to relax and spend unforgettable moments close to nature.

LOCATION

The tiny ancient village of Monterchi, is situated on the road to Città di Castello in the Tiber Valley, 30 kilometres from Arezzo. The major sights of Central Italy are a short drive away along the A1 motorway or E45 freeway: Arezzo, Cortona Siena, Gubbio, Perugia, Assisi and Lake Trasimeno are only 1 hour's drive. No more than 2 hours' drive to reach Florence, the Chianti wine Region, Montepulciano, Montalcino, San Marino and the Adriatic or Tirrenic seaside resorts. Just another hour's drive to reach Rome.
And when you've seen the sights you can leave the "madding crowds" behind and return to the peace of eastern Tuscany to enjoy a holiday amongst the vines and olives on the plains and hills of Tuscany with their charming villages, thermal baths, golf, tennis courts and horse-riding, and finally taste typical local food in a quiet little trattoria with its own home-made pasta or in a silver-service restaurant with Italian haute cuisine.

ACCOMMODATION IN THE FARMHOUSE

We can offer different accommodation for up to 22 people: on a weekly basis we can rent the whole complex or single apartments or rooms as the units have independent entrance and private garden. Alternatively, we can offer a B&B service.

The farmhouse complex consists of 3 buildings, in ancient times devoted to rural activities: manor house with Tabaccaia, Fienile and Rimessa. All of these have been completely restored, respecting both the original architecture - floors in "cotto toscano" tiles and ceilings in handmade bricks, wooden beams, rustic furnishings - and the benefits of modern comforts.

A large Taverna has been created from the former animal stalls. Meeting, living and reading room ideal for relaxing in front of a typical Tuscan fireplace, it can be used by guests staying in the rooms or renting the whole complex to enjoy their meals as there is also a fully-equipped kitchen annexe where it is possible to prepare and sample the delicacies that our valley offers, such as prosciutto, pecorino, home grown vegetables, truffles and field mushrooms.

On the upper level there are two rooms: the blue room is a romantic twin bedroom with a breathtaking view of Monterchi and can lodge an extra bed. En-suite bathroom with showerwash basinbidet and WC. The yellow room is a large (35m) room with a twin bed convertible into 2 single beds and a sofa (double or 2 single) bed. 2 wardrobestable with 4 chairs and satellite TV with DVD player complete the furniture and there is still room for an extra bed. From its large windows with brick grate you can enjoy a postcard landscape cosseted by the sunny atmosphere of the room.

On the lower level a large terrace leads to a self-contained apartment (for 4-6 people) with large living room with fully equipped kitchen and fireplace. Dining table for 6double sofa-bed and satellite TV complete the room. In the twin bedroom (convertible into double) there is another double sofa-bed with en-suite bathroom with showerwash basinbidet and WC. The peach walls and the views onto a natural terrace facing Monterchi and the Tuscan Appenines give light and charming atmosphere to the rooms. The paved terrace with outside table and chairs and the private garden are ideal for outdoor dining and sunbathing.
All the rooms and apartment are completely independent (self-regulating heatingindependent access). Each apartment has kitchen complete with electric ovengas hobfridge and freezer (dishwasher in the Taverna)

Where there was once the Tabaccaiathere are now two comfortable double rooms with en-suite bathroom with shower. On the ground floor the green room (twin bedroom convertible into double) with its delightful stone wall en-suite bathroom can lodge an extra bed. On the first floor the cream wallsthe period furniture and the stunning views over the green Tiber Valley give a romantic atmosphere to the double room.

The old Fienile is now a building on 2 levels with a self-contained apartment and two big bedrooms that can also be rented separately; both with independent access and surrounded by garden.

Attractions & Activities

You can go for relaxing walks strolling along the numerous pathways which start from our olive grove and continue on alongside a field of broom and poppies, overlooking a small lake where a distant church is reflected. This is only one of the many natural postcards of the Tuscan Tiber Valley you can discover at San Lorenzo.

For the more athletic, there are many sports you can do nearby: tennis courts and a golf course are only a 5-minute drive away and for those who love water sports, in 15 minutes you can reach a beautiful lake where you can go fishing, canoeing and even surf.

You can simply relax in our swimming pool and enjoy the warm colours of the surrounding countryside: from the brilliant green of the lawns to the more intense one of the oaks, from the gold of the wheat fields to the intense blue of the sky. If you still need more relaxation, thermal baths and a beauty farm are within just a 1/2 hour drive.
