Mare e Monti
Property # 8444

Property Description
Our two choices of accommodation can be found in Lavaggiorosso - an attractive hillside village in the Cinque Terre, 4 km from the coast and the town of Levanto. A narrow road (not suitable for vans or very large cars) winds its way up the hill to this small village, with around 100 inhabitants, which was established over 1000 years ago. It nestles against the hill - looking almost as if it has been carved out of the stone. The pretty little streets were originally intended for man and donkey. Cars must be left outside the village - two vehicles (one vehicle per apartment) can be parked on a private car park near to the village square, approx. 150 m from the house.

Why not visit some of the inviting and attractive coastal towns such as Portofino, Lerici, Tellaro and Fiascherino with its exclusive beaches? Versilia (the Tuscan Riviera) and Carrara (the marble bridge) are also within easy reach. Many day excursions can be undertaken from this Medieval hamlet - one week is hardly enough to explore everything worth seeing in the area. Pisa, Lucca and Florence are also near enough for a day trip. A holiday in Lavaggiorosso offers the guest a wide range of options: enjoy a colorful beach vacation on the Ligurian coast, visit the Ligurian and Tuscan towns known for their interesting art and, last but not least, savor the peace and quiet of village life.

Lavaggiorosso is 280 m above sea level. It is one of the oldest villages in the valley and was built behind a hill, to protect it from pirate attacks. The village church dates back to the time around 1600 - most of the houses are also from this period. The local products include olives, olive oil, sardines and wine. One should mention the "Sciacchetrà" (an exquisite, sweet dessert wine) and the dry Levanto, Bonassola and Framura wines. The village harbors the antique 'Zita Trattoria' - a simple restaurant at the top of a hill, run by a pleasant family. Enjoy friendly service and very reasonable prices. During the summer months, there is a bus connection from Lavaggiorosso to Levanto.

About the region

The Cinque Terre: Cinque Terre is one of the well preserved natural Mediterranean regions. It consists of 5 locations, nestling between the sea and the mountains and surrounded by green hills. In order to enjoy the fruits of a thousand years of work - olives, olive oil, sardines and wine, available in simple, family-run trattorias - one should learn the history of this challenging countryside, cultivated over the centuries by the patient and industrious farmers.
Visiting this area also means learning about wine-growing, fishermen and their nets, the stony valleys and their paths. Those who travel to Cinque Terre can choose between a trekking tour in the mountains or a diving trip in the sea; between the narrow paths - known as 'Carruggi' - or a boat trip; between climbing up to a mountain chapel or visiting a restaurant famous for its fish.

'The Five Lands' region derived its name from the 5 coastal villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. (See photo below for picture of Manarola and Vernazza). These villages are only accessible on foot, by ship or train. Perched on the steep cliffs and coastal hills, the Cinque Terre forms a nature and marine park, recognized by the UNESCO as a world heritage site. The C.A.I. (Club Alpino Italiano) has established a network of panoramic and well marked paths, popular with both travellers and hikers. Some of these are also suitable as riding or mountain bike trails.

Countryside and villages: The sea, the hills, vineyards, old fishing villages and the Genoan-style churches all provide breathtaking scenery. The Via dell'Amore (the Path of Love) is a path running over the cliffs between Riomaggiore and Manarola. Corniglia is built along a hill and has a naturally protected beach - ideal for a countryside holiday. Monterosso has a long sandy beach, with many amenities. a footpath, with wonderful views, runs above the villages, connecting them with one another.

Levanto: Surrounded by numerous hamlets, Levanto stretches along a wide bay. The town has 5000 inhabitants. It boasts both a long sandy beach and a shingle beach (with many sun shades in the summer), an interesting old town, many colorfully painted villas, a turbulent Wednesday market, a variety of good restaurants and pizzerias, as well as many inviting shops. There is both a diving club and sailing school on the beach. Motor boats, paddle boats, canoes, water skis and windsurfing boards are available for hire. Levanto is an ideal spot for surfing - when the weather is right surfers from all over the world gather here. There are also a tennis court, riding stables, swimming baths, cinema and disco. The town offers organized excursions around the Cinque Terre region and back-country. Levanto is not far from the major airports of Genoa (60 km) and Pisa (70 km) and also has its own railway station - Lucca and Florence are near enough for a day trip.
