Puerto Morelos Vacation Rentals
While Cancun has huge crowds and 24/7 action, its neighbor just 20km (12 miles) to the south might be the perfect place for a quieter and less glitzy Yucatan getaway. Puerto Morelos has beautiful beaches that are not yet overrun with tourists. This Caribbean fishing village is quite compact but packed with just the right amount of local charm and amenities to provide a relaxing and enjoyable stay. Vacation rentals range from modest cottages to magnificent mansions. All are much more affordable than similar accommodation in the big cities.
Divers and devotees of sea life are drawn to Puerto Morelos. An escorted underwater adventure led by a certified dive instructor is the best route to success. Options that will bring the visitor to the sites that are teeming with sea turtles and other critters include wreck dives and reef dives. On land, a short hop to a cenote for an amazing dive into a limestone-lined sinkhole is almost surreal.
There are some traces of ancient ruins in Puerto Morelos, but a serious archaeology fan will want to take a day trip to Tulum or Coba to see some of the most fascinating remains of the Mayan structures built more than a thousand years ago. Walking along the old roads and marveling at the construction techniques mastered by these former residents is awe-inspiring.
