Best bets for hot August weather activities in Miami-

Wet is the word for how to stay cool in Miami’s August heat. Some time with a snorkel exploring the coastline’s sea creatures and geological features is one popular option. Another is taking a short trip to Coral Gables’ Venetian Pool, a unique aquatic facility that is simply divine. A dip in the beautifully designed Venetian Pool’s 820,000 gallons of spring water is a real delight on a hot day. With a nice café and lots of attractive landscaping, spending an August day at this historic retreat is a great escape to South Florida’s Mediterranean haven.

Other wet and wild or mild options include a visit to a water park. Rapids Water Park in Riviera Beach is north of Fort Lauderdale and boasts 17 slides and pools, plus the Lazy River. Paradise Cove Water Park in Pembroke Pines also has lots of pools and slides. Kids five and under will find many things to do in the Parrot’s Point area of the park, where shallow pools, kid-size slides and many interactive play elements abound. Miami’s own Grapeland Water Park is also a good option for families, with Shipwreck Island designed for the 5-and-under crowd and Pirate’s Plunge perfect for older kids.

Since the middle of the day can be oppressively hot and humid in August, it is best to participate in more strenuous activities early in the morning or in the evening. Golf, tennis, beach volleyball, jogging, hiking or biking after breakfast or just before a late dinner might be the best way to handle the heat. For wave running, water skiing, parasailing, swimming and other water sports that get you wet, any time of day is the right time.

Anglers can take a charter boat to where the fish bite in Biscayne Bay or the Atlantic. Some of the larger vessels that go after the trophy catches well offshore are air conditioned, a great feature on a hot summer day.

Vacation Planning Tips:

A clear, cloudless sky can quickly become one full of lightning and thunder. It is wise to keep an eye to the sky and a plastic poncho or rain jacket in your pocket for the occasional cloudburst. Since thunderstorms can move into an area quickly, it is advisable to swiftly leave open areas like beaches and golf courses and seek shelter when the first clap of thunder is heard.

Light, casual clothes, a sun hat, sunglasses and lots of sunscreen will keep the visitor comfortable and protected from the extremely strong sun rays of August. Since South Florida is not only known for its sunshine, bring along some fancier outfits if an evening out at a upscale restaurant or nightspot is on the agenda.
