Best bets for hot July weather activities in Miami -

Mother Nature turns up the heat and humidity in Miami in July. While there is a good chance of showers in the late afternoon and evening, a day that is a total rainout is rare. It is best to schedule a swim, jog, golf tee time or tennis match for the morning, when temperatures are lower and so is the possibility of a thunderstorm.

Fans of fishing have many choices in July. While swordfish are few and far between in midsummer, there is a good chance that taking a charter boat out to the deep Atlantic waters in search of dolphin, kingfish, bonito and wahoo will be successful. Closer to shore, Biscayne Bay is ideal for fly fishing and for snagging some bonefish, tarpon and barracuda.

Families visiting with children have numerous entertaining and educational options. One place popular with all ages is the Miami Seaquarium, where dolphins, whales and sea lions put on quite a show. A visit to Jungle Island on Miami’s Watson Island - between Downtown Miami and South Beach - is an adventure for the whole family. Its 1.35 miles of winding trails are packed with tropical plants in a rainbow of colors. Its spacious grounds are home to hundreds of exotic birds, reptiles and mammals that range from African penguins to Indian zebus. The winged wonder show that includes a bicycle-riding cockatoo is a hoot.

Vacation Planning Tips:

A light jacket or sweater for use in air conditioned restaurants and malls might be a good idea for those who are sensitive. A plastic poncho or rain jacket in your pocket can keep you dry in a sudden downpour.

Since summer is a popular time for families with school age kids to visit Miami, be sure to book accommodations as early as possible.

When participating in strenuous activities in Miami’s midsummer heat and humidity, remember to keep yourself hydrated. Bring along a bottle of water or other nonalcoholic beverage when going for a jog, hike or bike ride, or when spending time on the beach. Use of sunhats, sunscreen and sunglasses are wise precautions to follow.
