Although September is one of the rainiest months, a day that is a total washout is quite rare and weather should not interfere with accomplishing just about everything on a things to do list. A nice mix of special events will please the palate, give participants and spectators a thrill, and provide an opportunity to enjoy a picnic and concert under the stars.

Every Labor Day weekend, talented teams come to Coconut Grove to compete in one of the world’s wackiest races. Each team of four or eight racers and one rider picks a theme, decorates a wheeled bed and heads for the starting line. Well wishers line the streets of the 1/8-mile course and shout out encouragement to their favorite competitors who are trying to swiftly push their entry to the finish line first. Scheduled for September 1 - 2, 2012, the fun event kicks off on Saturday night with the Pajama Pub Crawl, a charity fundraiser that allows attendees over 21 to visit several bars and nightspots for some pre-race beverages and snacks at a fixed price.

Best bets for warm September weather activities in Miami -

The climate in September is great for going to the beach and enjoying all kinds of water activities. Swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, parasailing and jet skiing are just a few of the popular options. Strolling along the shoreline and wading in the warm water are less strenuous and provide a refreshing and revitalizing lift for the body and soul. Eco tourists might want to consider a trip to Dolphin Harbor at the Miami Seaquarium or Dolphin World in Key Biscayne to swim with the dolphins. Another trendy eco adventure in the Miami area is sea kayaking in the shallow waters near Bear Cut Preserve, where encounters with a variety of coastal birds, tropical fish and enormous eagle rays are common. Indian Key is great for snorkeling in waters that have coral reefs ready to explore and countless sea creatures ready to be photographed.

On land, tennis and golf remain perennially popular pastimes. With high heat and humidity and the chance of rain greatest late in the day, the best time to hit the court or the course is in the morning.

Fishing is great throughout the year. Whether an angler prefers going out in the deep or staying close to shore, something is always biting. The chances of hooking a swordfish at the beginning of September are slim, but things really pick up later in the month. Other deep sea catches on a late September day usually include mahi, sailfish, kingfish and amberjacks.

Vacation Planning Tips:

Since the weather is still hot and humid, staying hydrated is very important. When going on an eco adventure or just stretching out on the beach, be sure to bring along and drink lots of water. Protecting the skin and eyes from the sun is also a precaution that should be followed. Sun hats, sunscreen and sunglasses should be used every day.

Shorts, T-shirts, flip flops and other casual gear are great for most daytime activities. But there are so many things to do after the sun goes down that require some fancier clothes. Pack some nice outfits and shoes for the nights of dining and dancing at a fine bistro or South Beach club. And for those times when a shower is in the weather forecast, bring along a rain poncho or light rain jacket.
