Location: 3 km east of Siena.
A road winds its way up the hill from Vico d'Arbia to the "Castello delle Quattro Torri", the Castle of the Four Towers. The visitor approaching from Siena will be able to spot this Medieval castle from far away, perched on the top of the hill, towering above the Tuscan countryside.
Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, the latter still used to produce the delicious Chianti wine, we see the four red brick towers, now classified as a national monument. Here you can find a very romantic accomodation for a couple: a small junior suite with bed & breakfast - a pleasant place to stay near Siena. As a guest here, you have access to the garden, enjoy a great view, reach the town quickly, and you'll take pleasure in a good night's sleep in a castle. Could you imagine a better place to stay?
Art lovers can begin their journey right here. This medieval castle, dating back to the early 14th century, was built (just like all of Siena!) with red brick. The castle has a square ground plan with four corner towers, and a wonderful inner court is hidden behind the portal with its pointed arches. Above the portal there is a projection from which hot oil was poured in former times to ward off the enemy. What is nowadays the mail box was originally an embrasure which protected the archers.
Originally the castle was built as a fortress of the Republic of Siena and was involved in the battles fought between Siena, ruled by the Guelfi family, and Florence, dominated by the Ghibellini family. One almost expects to see the gates open and a battle between the ancient enemies to commence... After the fall of the Sienese Republic in 1555 it was finally occupied by Cosimo de Medicis’s troops. Most of the valuable furniture was then looted but the building itself escaped harm. When it was of minor importance to the military the castle was primarily used as a private residence. The castle is still today in private ownership and has been carefully adapted to modern living requirements. The building is in excellent condition and well preserved, and the ministry of culture has identified it as one of the most beautiful national monuments. The owner has recently renovated one of the four towers to a unique junior suite with bed and breakfast. From up here one has magnificent views of Crete, to the south, and of Siena.
How to reach the tower: the entrance to the elegant castle courtyard is marked by a stately wooden portal. Stairs lead up to the third floor, to the owner’s apartment. The “little suite” is beyond this private wing and is on two levels: the lower floor holds an antechamber with reading facilities (two easy chairs) and an attractive bathroom (shower). Stairs lead up to a raised gallery in the tower. There one finds the double bed. The gallery has been fitted with modern wooden planking, which contrasts well with the ancient beams. The room has a new and jaunty air to it. It has a total of five (!) large windows - like sleeping in a lantern - providing outstanding views of the castle roof and the surrounding hilly countryside. Breakfast is served in the owner’s private living room by the lady of the house.
