Villa Obear (dom. Republic)
Property # 8067

Property Description
Casa Obear combines American taste, choices, conveniences and efficiencies with Dominican architecture, design, textiles, stucco, mahogany, tiles and gardens.

When Dominican architect Milan Lora and his designer wife Virginia Cabral met with Bill and Jan Obear, they found a way for their worlds to meet, mesh and complement. Add the original artwork of Vinicio Castillo, a swimming pool by quality builder Federico Salcedo and gardens designed by Simon de los Santos and the comfort haven is complete. Our experienced (15 years) employees will meet your flight and cheerfully see to your needs.

..... and bring your laptop to send and receive e-mail from the people in your world who depend upon you. Casa Obear has unlimited Internet access for your convenience.

Accommodations

3 king size beds, 1 queen, 3 queen size sofa beds and two bunk beds

A huge American style kitchen worthy of a cruise ship with GE dishwasher, refrigerator and microwave, gas and electric cooking island and built-in oven is the heart of the first floor, adjoining the living room and formal dining area where mahogany louver doors open to the panoramic ocean view. There is a downstairs bedroom/living area with bath, an alcove with desk, phone and private balcony.

The master bedroom suite upstairs also is quite large with comfortable seating and luxurious bathroom with both a stall shower and Roman tub. A large upstairs sitting room with TV and internet access provides an inspiring view and a perfect place to assemble before dinner. It opens to a sun terrace on the one side and a covered secluded terrace on the other.

A covered walk though a walled atrium garden takes you to a second structure and 3-room suite with kitchen, dining area, large living room with 3 queen size sofa beds and separate entrance to the swimming pool area. A 4th bedroom also has double deck bunk beds and private access to the downstairs bath in the main building.

Each of the 3 large bedrooms has a private tile bathroom with shower. Every room - except the baths - has a ceiling fan. Two bedrooms also have air conditioners. High ceilings, rich woodwork and comfortable furnishings describe the decor.

The kidney shaped swimming pool with aerobic depths is complemented by a terrace, botanical garden and outlook to the landmark mountain Isabel de Torres. The secluded, tranquil setting has a gas barbecue, eating area ... and a waterfall!

Begin each day with breakfast served to you on the front terrace as you are touched by a soft ocean breeze while absorbing the panorama and colorful landscape.

Activities & Attractions
BEACH: The Costambar multinational residential community has 2 kilometers of firm white sand beach.

CLIMATE: The Dominican Republic, often referred to as the Caribbean’s best kept secret, shares the same latitude as Hawaii and many of the attributes. The average annual temperature is 77 degrees. Predictable temperatures throughout the winter months range from 75 degrees to 90 and in the summer 89 to 95 with lower temperatures on the North Coast.

COMMUNICATIONS: Casa Obear has a telephone number which we will provide. And the telephone service in the DR is very good. Recognizing that simply being accessible to family and business associates can be important in eliminating stress factors, we have ordered a second line for a dedicated fax, and we also plan to have internet access available from Casa Obear should you bring your laptop computer. Meanwhile, we are walking distance to Paul’s Pub & Cybercafe on the Costambar entry road providing internet access for e-mail communications and fax service.

CURRENCY: The Dominican peso is exchanged for US dollars currently at a rate in the area of 16 to 1 at designated exchange banks and a somewhat lower rate at the airport, hotels, markets and commercial banks.

FOOD/RESTAURANTS: Modern supermarkets are no more than 10 minutes away in Puerto Plata, and there are convenience stores within Costambar + restaurants:

FISHING: Deep sea charters leave Puerto Plata every morning for half day outings. On the several trips we have taken, the boat always managed to catch something, but as a good fishing buddy once said, the best part about goin’ fishin’ is goin’!

FLYING TIMES: From New York (3-1/4 hrs), from Miami (1-3/4 hrs), from San Juan (35 mins), from Toronto (5 hrs) and from most European cities (8-10 hrs).

GOLF: Costambar has a challenging 9-hole (Los Mangos) executive golf course 970-7143. A Robert Trent Jones championship course at Playa Dorada (between the airport & Puerto Plata) and the magnificent new Playa Grande course, with 10 holes bordering the ocean, will be of special interest to the serious golfer. It is being compared to the famous Pebble Beach course. Playa Grande is a delightful beach an hour and a half scenic drive to the east from Casa Obear.

HORSEBACK RIDING and mountain tours are conveniently arranged in Costambar

LANGUAGE: Spanish is the official language, but English now is widely spoken.

SNORKELING/SCUBA DIVING: Sosua is the place to go for these activities. It is located 30 minutes from Costambar not far past the Puerto Plata International Airport. Catamaran snorkeling/diving excursions leave the Playa Dorada hotel complex for Playa Sosua. You also can do it from small boats leaving the delightful Sosua horseshoe beach at frequent intervals; or you may decide to snorkel right from the beach. We highly recommend lunch at Pietro Giorgio overlooking the beach from high above should you plan to be in Sosua.

SIGHTSEEING: There is much to see. We enjoy watching the windsurfers from a comfortable table at the Cabarete Beach Hotel a few miles beyond Sosua.

TIME: The Dominican Republic is in the same time zone as the U.S. Eastern seaboard, but Daylight Savings Time is in effect year round. So New York and Miami are 1 hour behind in the Fall.

TRANSPORTATION: Car rentals are available at the airport, but you also can enjoy your stay at Casa Obear without a car. Jesús can take you to town and the more distant parts of Costambar. He will be at the airport to greet you on arrival.

TV/VCR: We have cable TV and a VCR. There also is a satellite dish, but we have decided that cable is more easily accomplished, so our dish is not currently operative. You may wish to bring a few VCR tapes, although rentals are available.
