Pono means excellent and ponohouse lives up to this in every way. Beautiful balinese architecture with blue tile roof, flagstone courtyard, superb tropical gardens, slide-away walls and a 180 degree view of the ocean. We see whales in the bay all winter sometimes just 100 yards offshore. Many celebrities have rented Ponohouse because of it's exotic beauty, it's privacy, and the opulent surroundings.
Ponohouse sits above a deep gorge on the edge of Uaoa bay and has a lap pool and hot tub, so the site is not appropriate for children.
The floors are bamboo hardwood, the posts are solid opia wood, fine furniture, original artwork by some of hawaii's finest artists, and spectacular carpentry using exotic woods like Koa, Mango, and Birdseye.
The master bedroom has a Tempurpedic king matress, the private suite across the pool bridge has a king, and the courtyard bedroon has a queen. Each bedroom is completely self contained, each in separate buildings connected by roofed walkways and bridges.
There is a caretaker on site, but his accomodations have a separate driveway and he is very discreet--you won't see him unless you need him.
Special features: Ponohouse has wireless internet, on-site caretaker, Tropical gardens, tropical flowers on arrival, lap pool with jacuzzi, binoculars and telescopes for whale watching, sky chairs, chaise lounges and outdoor funiture for dining and lounging. The mailing address for Ponohouse is in Haiku, but it's actually in Peahi, the home of Jaws, the world's most awesome surfing wave. The lookout for Jaws is less than a mile away.
Nearby is Ho'okipa, a very popular surfing and windsurfing spot, with a great overlook for the less adventurous. Excellent swimming and boogeyboarding at Baldwin Beach and Paia Bay. The quaint town of Paia has excellent restaurants and funky shopping though the shops have made a definate turn upscale as more people discover the delights of the north shore.
