Villa Il Palio enchants all of her guests - as much by her outstanding location as by her well thought out interior. This villa has both - a private and a completely classy touch. The then master builders chose a great location: the villa is situated on an elevated position on the ridge of a hill directly opposite Siena, which also sits on a hill. You'll have a superb view from here: the skyline of Siena, the cathedral dome and the campanili (bell towers) are within your reach.
Villa Il Palio remains unchanged with an authentic interior and exterior, but all the modern comforts we expect in our day and age are, of course, present. Last year the villa, which dates back to the 17th century, was completely renovated down to the last detail. Every stone was picked up, dusted off and put back where it belonged.
The original antique and exquisite furniture was restored and newly upholstered, the marble floors shine and the walls shimmer in a hardly noticeable, subdued yellow. In addition, the whole house is flooded with sunshine.
In an airy position on the edge of the Chianti countryside and with possibly the best view of Siena, Villa Il Palio is a villa in ample grounds. It provide the following high class accomodation: Entrance hall, drawing room with double sofa-bed, large dining-kitchen, with excellent equipment including a dish washer, study, shower room, seperate WC and wash bassin, boiler and laundry room, underground wine cellar.
The gracious dining-room has glazed doors leading to a terrace where one can dine outside, overlooking the walled rose garden with lemon trees and a lemon house at the rear. A marble staircase leads to a sitting room on the first floor, off which are two twin bedrooms, two double bedrooms and a bedroom with a small double bed. In the master bedroom is an extra sofa bed for a child. There are three large modern bathrooms and a dressing room on this floor.
As may be imagined in a villa of this nature, the rooms are beautifully proportioned and large and airy. There is an Art Nouveau atmosphere, enhanced by prestigious draperies and decorative granite flooring. Every room has a TV point and a telephone plug.
This villa emanates elegance and extravagance. It is finely structured - from top to bottom - and its noblesse continues outside. The south side opens to an extensive, well-kept and diverse garden offering a rare view of Siena.
There is a private chapel (in which mass may be celebrated), an Italian-style garden with neatly trimmed hedges and flower beds, a large terrace with a view of the lemon house, a forecourt in front of the villa with a century-old tree and, of course, a pool. In contrast to the villa, the pool is simple and unadorned, but it has a lovely view of Siena, and serves its purpose for cooling off and having fun after a long day's sight seeing. Cypresses line the drive to the villa.
Villa Il Palio is located in one of the best residential neighbourhoods in the area with stylish villas and country estates nearby. The closed-in property has two accesses: a portal at the narrow country lane for residents and a private access with an automatic gate. The surrounding rural area is peaceful and quiet: standing in front of the house, on the main side of the villa turning towards the south, your eyes will wander over gardens and green hillsides to the skyline of the city. At the back of the house you'll have a view of a wide hilly landscape.

This is where the Chianti region begins. A lane nearby the villa leads into the Chianti road, for exploring castles and vineyards, while the main arterial roads from Siena, less than 1 km away, allow easy access to Florence and San Gimignano, Arezzo e Assisi. You can drive to shops and restaurants nearby, and take a bus or even walk the 2 km to the historic centre with all the art treasures and fascinating streets and shops to esplore.
The famous Palio takes place on this Piazza twice a year (in the beginning of July and in mid-August), a colourful horse-racing festival, held since the Middle Ages, in which every Contrada (city quarter) sends off its festively decorated horse to defend the quarter's honour after it has been blessed in the church. Siena awaits the festival in a fever of anticipation the whole year long. In the week before and after the Palio, celebrations take place in the streets: festive meals are eaten outside on long tables, large banquets in the romantic streets of the town organised by the various Contrade for hundreds of people.
